MOUNT KILIMANJARO MACHAME - TANZANIA

Our ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro follows the scenic Machame route on the ascent and the Mweka descent route. This takes us off the beaten path, provides better opportunities for altitude acclimatization and some of the best views on the mountain.

  DAILY ITINERARY

Day 1
– Moshi
Upon arrival you will be transferred to Mountain Inn at Moshi for dinner and a pre-trek briefing. Overnight at lodge.

Day 2 – Moshi – Machame Camp (3000m)
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Park Gates where our mountain guide and porters await us. After registering at the park gates, begin trekking through lush forest. A 5-6 hour trek brings us to our first campsite.

Day 3 – Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3800m)
This morning we leave the forest behind as we ascend through heather and open moorland. After about five hours, we reach the Shira Plateau where our porters have set up camp near the Shira Cave.

Day 4 – Shira Camp – Barranco Camp (3900m)
This is an important acclimatization day which follows the Shira plateau up and around the Lava Tower before descending through a beautiful valley to our camp at Barranco. Our walking time is 5-6 hours.

Day 5 – Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp (4600 m)
Continuing east from Barranco we ascend the Barranco wall, a non-technical ascent of some 300 m. We continue trekking across the high altitude desert to Barafu camp where we will rest prior to making our summit attempt.

Day 6 – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka Camp (3100m)
Our ascent begins in the early hours of the day to enable us to arrive at Stella Point shortly after dawn. The route winds its way up the gravel trail to the far right of Rebmann Glacier arriving at Stella Point (5795m) on the rim of the crater after 5 - 6 hours. From here it is another hour to Uhuru Peak. From here, the only way is down, retracing our steps to Barafu Camp. From here we continue to descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 7 – Mweka Camp – Moshi (900m)
A straight forward descent (10 km) to the park gates at Mweka where we say good-bye to our porters and guide. From here we transfer by road back to Moshi for a well deserved shower and rest. Dinner and overnight at lodge.

Day 8 – Moshi
After breakfast, transfer back to the airport or shuttle to Arusha/Nairobi.
