Cycling Rajasthan
An adventure of history and cultural experience
Rajasthan provides a sheer magical experience of road cycling through
a land of extremely colourful people. The Rajputs (traditional inhabitants
of Rajasthan) are a very chivalrous and martial race. Their rule here
has left them a legacy of magnificent Forts, Palaces and Mansions. Quite
a few of them have been converted into modern hotels. The highlight
of our Rajasthan tour itinerary would be our effort to encapsulate some
of the glory, grandeur, traditional hospitality and Old World charm
by overnighting in some of these grand palaces and mansions. The cycling,
which is accompanied throughout by our support vehicle is on paved roads.
With a view towards avoiding the main traffic and also for a glimpse
of typical Indian rural and tribal life we would cycle and walk on minor
roads. Whenever possible, we side step the main road and get into a
town or village road, do a sort of inverted 'U' trip and join back into
a town or village thus giving us an opportunity to get off the beaten
track and experience India in its traditional colours. Again, once having
reached our destination we allow each cyclist to cycle as an individual
and do what is dictated by his interests and stamina. The beauty of
this tour is that we often base at remote areas where life exists as
it used to a couple of centuries behind modern times. This allows cyclists
to explore traditional gypsy or tribal villages close by and which can
be approached by dust trails. The traditional bright and colourful dresses
of the locals, their primitive means of agriculture, traditional homes
and lifestyles, camel carts, and donkey carts as the main mode of transport,
step wells, traditional occupations such as clay pottery, hand printing
of fabrics, tie dye etc., provide a first hand experience of a living
museum. Again, with the help of our accompanying escort, we interact
with the locals and gain greater insight into their lives.
