Apuan Alps
In the north of Tuscany lies a hidden jewel of mountain wilderness, superb scenery and tranquility. The rolling hills of the Apuan Alps offer walkers everything from Mediterranean vistas to remote hamlets in dramatic mountain settings. Enjoy the pleasures of Tuscan wines and cuisine in the pleasant, unsophisticated ambiance of this remote part of Tuscany.
An impressive series of limestone massifs that rise up to 2000mwithin a few kms of the sea, the Apuans are famous for their scenery of limestone towers, abysses, marble and the largest cave system in Italy. From the town of Fornaci, we start the walk through oak and chestnut woodland, past hamlets and grottos up toa view point affording a spectacular view of the highest peaks of the Apennines. En route to Trassilico (732m) we stumble across remote chapels. We explore the hamlet of Chieva complete with its old mill that grinds chestnuts for flour. We climb Monte Forato (1223m) visit the "Grotta del Vento" with its subterranean lakes and "living" stalagmites and stalactites. An easy walk to Alpe San Antonio prepares us for the longest day and the ascent of Pania della Croce (1860m). The view from the summit is quite magnificent .
