La Gomera - The Canary Isles
La Gomera is an idyllic, relaxed island perfect for warm weather walking. Its dramatic volcanic, mountainous scenery is unique in Europe, a tropical paradise, featuring cultivated terraces, rain forest and dry, rocky landscape. Before telephones, the islanders developed a unique form of whistling to communicate from valley to valley. The climate varies little with winter temperatures between 18 C and 24 C, just right for walking.
. La Gomera's highest point is the Alto de Garajonay at 1,450 metres and there is very little flat land at all due to the deep ravines (barrancos) that cut into the island from the central highlands. You will be virtually walking round the island, having gone from a dry, rocky landscape through cultivated terraces and banana plantations, to sub-tropical rain forest. The temperature changes little from season to season with only about 6_C difference between winter and summer. Average winter temperature is 18_C and summer 24_C. This allows the cultivation of a wide variety of exotic crops on the ingeniously built terraces. It also means you can enjoy Gomera all year round. It is probably our most popular Inn to Inn Walk.
TRAIL MARKERS: At present, marking is a bit sporadic but you will be armed with our walking notes and a map of the island, and the advice of our local rep.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS: Five out of seven nights on a half-board basis (breakfast and evening meal). For the remaining two evenings we thought it would be more fun to choose where to eat from the selection of restaurants in the neighbourhood. One lunch is included at country restaurant and a packed lunch on two days.
ARRIVAL: Flight to Tenerife South Airport to arrive no later than 3pm; taxi to port of Los Cristianos (approx. $30) then onward ferry to La Gomera (90 minutes) (approx. œ30 single). You will be met from the ferry and taken to the hotel in Hermigua.
END OF TOUR: After breakfast on Day 8. Order a taxi from Parador to the port or walk it if you have rucksacks (very short distance) for the ferry to Tenerife.
