Sierra De Tramontana
The older villages and small mountain towns such as Valledemossa, Soller, Deia and Fornalutz are particularly attractive, with mellow stone walls and flower-bedecked balconies and courtyards.
Still little known to tourists and running parallel to the NW coast of the island of Mallorca is the Sierra de Tramontana, a majestic mountain range with peaks of limestone, up to 1,370m (4,500ft). Mountain tops are either rocky, bare or carpeted with tussock grass, above a belt of dense shady Holm Oak forest. On lower slopes and coastlines, graced with Aleppo and Stone pine, elegant farmsteads preside over terraces of olive, almond and orange groves.
Our route takes you to two of the highest peaks: El Teix (1,063m) via the C19th 'Archduke's walk' above Valledemossa, and from Lluc Monastery, Massanella Peak (1,351m). There are stupendous views of the northern part of the range and the great fertile Mallorcan plain far below. From Soller we take the traditional stone-paved Pilgrims' Way which ascends a rugged barranco (ravine) from Biniaraix to the viewpoint at Mirador de ses Barques. Depending on the time of year, there is the chance of a boat trip along the NW coast from Puerto Soller to the beautiful beach of Sa Calobra, where lofty cliffs are the protected habitat of a variety of sea birds.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS: Are on a half board basis. Dinner, bed and breakfast.
ARRIVAL: The first hotel is the Santuari de Lluc. Take a taxi direct to Lluc. Cost 8000 pesetas (Approximately $100 cdn) in 1998. Journey time is about 1 hour. Alternatively by bus from the airport to the centre of Palma, then by train to Inca and a short taxi ride to Lluc. Journey time 2 hours.
END OF TOUR: The tour ends after breakfast on day 8 at Valldemosa. You can travel from Valldemossa to Palma airport by bus (1 hour).
