Wildstrubel Circuit - Switzerland
Beautiful chalets. Flowered carpeted alpine meadows. Cows with sonorous bells. This is quinessential Switzerland – famous for its Alpine lifestyle - a place where you’ll find yourself humming ‘the sound of music’. This circuit route starting in the beautiful alpine village of Kandersteg, takes in part of the famous Alpine Pass route. This is one of the most beautiful classic walks in the Alps – Switzerland at its best.
Always keeping the Wildstrubel massif on our right, we cross over the great European watershed via the Gemmi Pass into the Rhone Valley which drains ultimately to the Mediterranean, and then cross back over the Rawyl Pass to the headwaters of streams which flow north to join the Rhine.
Between the Gemmi and Rawyl Passes, high up on the north side of the Rhone Valley, our trail from the hot spring resort of Leukerbad, follows in the footsteps of such notables as Guy de Maupassant, Mark Twain and Pablo Picasso, to the French-speaking ski and haute-couture resort of Crans-Montana. There are stupendous views south to the big 4000m peaks of the Valais, the Dent Blanche, The Weisshorn, Monte Rosa, The Matterhorn and Grand Combin. From Lenk to Adelboden and back to Kandersteg we follow the classic Alpine Pass Route, crossing the Hahnenmoospass (1956m) and finally the awesome Bunderchrinde (2385m).
TRAIL MARKERS: The trail route is well marked. All major destinations and timings are signposted.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS: 2 and 3 star hotels with ensuite facilities. Dinner, bed and breakfast throughout.
ARRIVAL: Train to Kandersteg, changing at Bern. Journey time 2 hours 40 minutes from Zurich or 3.5 hours from Geneva.
END OF TOUR: After breakfast on the final day, take the train to Zurich Airport. Journey time as above.
